The Kremlin has accused the West of creating tensions by planning to block Russian ships in international straits.

On Monday, three Russian missile ships carried out simulated cruise missile strikes against coastal targets of a hypothetical enemy during naval exercises in the Baltic Sea.

“The firing drills were conducted using Kalibr-NK missile systems. Following the simulated launches, all targets were successfully hit,” the Russian Baltic Fleet reported.

The planned exercises involved the ships Naro-Fominsk, Zelioni Dol and Serpujov, the Baltic Fleet added. The vessels also practiced passive interference measures to evade anti-ship missiles.

Meanwhile, two Russian ships from the Northern Fleet – the corvette Stoiki and the anti-submarine ship Vice Admiral Kulakov – practiced locating and destroying submarines in the Baltic.

“During the assigned mission, the corvette Stoiki carried out a series of actions to classify and track an underwater target using the ship’s sonar system. The detected submarine was then virtually destroyed with torpedoes,” the Russian Navy said.

The crew of the Vice Admiral Kulakov located and tracked an enemy submarine before destroying it with depth charges launched from an RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launcher. The ship also practiced evasive maneuvers against a simulated torpedo attack.

Russia regularly conducts naval exercises in the Baltic Sea and has accused the West of “creating tensions through provocations” by planning to block Russian ships in international straits in response to the war in Ukraine.

In May, the Estonian Navy attempted to stop an unflagged tanker, which it claimed was part of a “ghost fleet” used by Russia to evade Western sanctions. The tanker refused to stop, and a Russian fighter jet appeared to escort it.
